Japanese researchers discover a new variant of the coronavirus. As of August 9th, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Japan has found that the COVID-19 virus spreading in Japan since June is a mutated version with a new genetic sequence. The study indicates that from March to May, most cases were caused by European strains but then declined. In late June and early July, however, a new strain emerged centered in Tokyo and spread across the country.

The second wave of infections has begun, with Japanese experts warning this time it's different due to the mutation. Young people are increasingly affected without symptoms or mild symptoms.

Actor Masaki Suda was accused by Weekly Shukan Bunshun magazine on August 7th for drinking alcohol and staying overnight at an hotel with an underage model (17 years old). Johnny & Associates responded saying they didn't know about her age before inviting her to drink together at their friend's bar where she had introduced herself as over 18 years old; they claimed he only knew after seeing news reports about it.

On August 7th, actor Kento Yamazaki announced his marriage to actress Mei Nakayama through their talent agency after submitting their marriage registration on that day. They have been living together and will continue working as actors while being married.
